Officer Mestdagh was shot in the chest and killed during a robbery at Traxler Pharmacy, 651 E. 59th when he encountered three men who just robbed the store. Officer Mestdagh was shot four times, possibly with his own revolver, in the rear of the pharmacy and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The suspect was apprehended, served his sentence, and has since been released and continues to threaten other officers from the Kansas City Police Department.

Officer Mestdagh had served with the agency for 3 years. He previously served in the US Army in Viet Nam and was survived by his son. Interred: Floral Hills Cemetery.
